George H. Atkinson, a Congregational minister in the Pacific Northwest, graduated from Dartmouth College in 1843 and from Andover Theological Seminary in 1846. Unable to accept an appointment to a mission in Africa because he had not yet been ordained, he sailed to Oregon by way of Hawaii with his wife, arriving in 1848. Cyrus Locey, a rancher and farmer in eastern Oregon, is often called "The Father of Malheur County." He traveled the Oregon Trail twice, lived in a California mining town, and, in 1852, settled permanently in Oregon. He attended Pacific University, worked for the Oregon Transportation Company, and held various other jobs and civic responsibilities.
